REPORT PURPOSE
To obtain Council approval for the Manager Community Services, Mrs P Olver, to attend the 25th National Conference of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
BACKGROUND
Australian Association of Social Workers National Conferences are held every 2 years and rotate around Australia. The 1997 conference is to be held at the Australian National University in Canberra. Funds are available in the current budget for "early bird" registration. Other costs will be allowed for in the 1997/98 budget.
The theme of the conference is "Social Work Influencing Outcomes". Restructuring, deregulation and globalisation herald a changing context for social work practice in Australia. What is the role of social work in this environment? How does the diverse social work profession influence outcome? The conference provides a forum for sharing knowledge, examining approaches and clarifying objectives in order that social workers may influence outcomes of social justice, enhanced quality of life and the full potential of each individual, group and community in society.
Discussion areas of particular relevance for the City of Stirling are:
. Working within a competitive tendering environment.
. The requirements for economic justification and unit costing.
. Clear goal identification and evaluation of effectiveness.
. Maintenance of standards within an environment of budgetary constraints.
. Use of technology.
. Workplace changes.
At 3.10pm Councillor Vallelonga arrived at the meeting during consideration of Item CS2.
